Nitrogen
Nitrogen (N₂) is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that makes up 78% of the Earth's atmosphere. It is inert in its molecular state, non-toxic, non-flammable and does not support combustion, although it can cause asphyxiation by displacing oxygen. It is obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air.
Inert atmospheres:
Food and pharmaceutical industry, fire suppression and heat treatments.
Purging and transfer of fluids:
Used in the chemical, petrochemical and electronics industries.
Degassing and stirring:
In aluminium, magnesium and liquid processes.
Cryogenic refrigeration:
Medical and food research, mechanical fitting and plastics moulding.
Cutting and joining of materials:
Plasma and laser cutting of steels, thermal spraying.
Analytical instrumentation:
Used in gas chromatography, elemental analysis and atomic absorption.
